The High-Tech Vertical Farmer

  • In the kale-filled facility at vertical farm startup Bowery Farming, it’s a piece of proprietary software that makes most of the critical decisions -- like when to harvest and how much to water each plant. But it still takes humans to carry out many tasks around the farm. Katie Morich, 25, loves the work. But as roboticists make gains, will her employer need her forever? This is the fourth episode of Next Jobs, a series about careers of the future hosted by Bloomberg Technology's Aki Ito.

agree with other comments. This all looks very expensive to set up. how much does it cost to run. how many tons a year does it produce. do the grow lamps mean the crops are ready 20% or 60% quicker. How many crops a year. how do you populate a tray. whats required to get the tray into the system and onto the computers monitoring software. fertilizer? is it in the water, how is it added. Harvesting - is it all hands on deck or one person moving trays. how do they get it to market? that staircase doesn't look fun with your hands full. All in all a hopeless article.

No offense to the micro green growers , I think they are great . However, I’m getting really really tired of going to farmers markets all over the country ( I’m a truck driver) and seeing half the market being greens. I get the small grow space high profit, but wow 😯 can we please get some variety of foods ? I like diversity of foods . There has to be profitable foods other than greens out there. Please do a video on non greens and profits , thank you .

Interesting video. I like her backstory. I think the reason people complain in comments are they do not like to get reminded of their own self-doubts. I like to be reminded, and see it was not only me. Also let me get reminded that most young people today are just like that. I was the same. Took me many years to find my self and my spot in the world. Because parenting and the system failed.

This system is not practical for anyone but Bloomberg Billionaires, the overhead is simply too massive in a huge facility like this to be realistic for regular start ups, think of the programming costs and maintenance alone . This hardly even teaches the actual workers what they’re doing. Not how I would run this business.

This is what happens when you cater to only 'staff' and not the target audience. Know that most of ur audience is nerdy and curious people not lonely ones. Know your audience Bloomberg, this is a notch on the belt we had to mark. No more. Dislike for me unfortunately due to the staff's extensive backstory

wow... why so much hate in the comments for the background on one of the workers...? i thought it was interesting how she had come to start doing this and what a day in the life of a automated vertical farm worker was like. Notice the title says The High-Tech Vertical FARMER... not FARM

The greens from these vertical factories have no flavor at all compared to those grow in natural sunlight. Having tried several varieties it’s all the same. Crap
