The elegance and beauty of female figure skating is one-of-a-kind. For the ladies, they use a combination of classic artistry and athletic technicality to wow judges and audiences all over the world. The point system can sometimes be a little confusing, ok… it’s seriously mind-boggling...but most of the time, you can visually tell who won the competition. Although, there are some incidents which confuse viewers and experts alike. Perhaps it was the Russian duel in PyeongChang, the French judge in Salt Lake City, or the infamous Harding-Kerrigan rivalry. Yeah, sometimes figure skating can get a little dramatic. Whatever the case, skating scandals occur regularly. It's not the kind of sport you'll see get round the clock coverage, but whenever it does appear in the spotlight, many pay attention and they get a little more interested in some of the lesser known facts about the sport. One of the more lesser known things about figure skating is all of the crazy rules we don’t even know these skaters are required to adhere to. In order to understand the details behind these stories, you have to dive into the depths of the International Skating Union (ISU) rulebook, and also into the life of a female figure skater. Yeah, it’s a lot of research. Luckily, we already did that for you! Sit back as we play judge and jury with 15 super strict rules that female figure skaters have to follow; both written and unwritten. Some of these are just downright confusing.

I’ve been skating for ten years. These rules are pretty generic. There are also many cases in which these rules don’t apply. Mostly accurate though

So in short, if you are more athletic and creative than others and want to stand out, you will be deducted points and most likely won't win.

All these videos make the sport / activity seem way worse than it actually is, like the ballet one is true, they make it seem like hell when it is their passion, so it is worth it for them.

Admitted it's a beàutiful sport but does not seem worth àll the hoops and ladders you have to jump and the rigors of altered life style for the end game. This is just an opinion in observations.

The music/tempo rule is only for ice dance.
The rule about the three spins is for short programs. The short program is nothing BUT a list of required elements though: a jump combo, a double or triple axel, a jump preceded by steps, a flying spin, a single-position spin (used to have to be a layback for women), a combo spin (with a minimum number of position changes on each foot), and some footwork sequences. Long programs can and do have more spins (usually a total of four), as well as more jumps and footwork. Because they're, you know.....longer.
The jump rule (known as the Zayak rule because she used to do four triple toe loops in her program) limits skaters in the long program to only one repeat each of up to two triple jump entrances (there's no limit on doubles), and the repeated jump has to be in combination at least one of the two times it's attempted. Since there are only six recognized entrances (toe loop, salchow, loop, flip, lutz, axel), a skater who can do a triple axel can do a total of eight triples in a long program. Very few women can do the triple axel, so in practice most women max out at seven triples.
But I mean......every sport has rules like this. Gymnastics routines have to conform to specific standards; divers have to include certain elements, etc. If anything, knowing certain parameters makes it easier to construct a program than starting with a completely blank slate.

Can you please explain how steroids don't play a part in a sport that solely depends on speed, strength, and balance. Aside from that, your explanation of it shows that there was no research done on how exactly PED work.

You should do rules of a Ballet Dancer if you haven’t already. I feel our rules are a bit less or more strict depending on the rule. Like the 13% body fat or less rule.

These poor girls have so much put on them! Do the ma,e figure skaters have the same guidelines? I’ve tried it once or twice maybe (can’t remember I was young) but I could not stay up to save my life! 🙃 Ofcourse I live in south GA, USA so we don’t see much snow or ice. If we get even an inch of snow our entire state shuts down. I also was not blessed with balance or coordination. Mama always said she’s a smart girl but she can’t walk and chew gum at the same time! (In other words I was clumsy) I really am in awe and love watching figure skating esp the women’s and the pairs they seem like ballet on ice but every time I see one fall I feel terrible thinking what they must’ve endured to learn and get to such a skill level. And then there is the ideals in size, weight, etc. making it harder if you are not meeting what is perceived to be the “proper look” add competition on to this and its got to be hard for any girl in the sport not having anyone who understands how much you do miss out on while training I’m sure it makes it hard to have friends and why so many do get depressed and stressed out!
