I would've finished this video if either of these presenters had the personality of anyone at New Rockstars. Or at least the editing to make it sound like they've taken an interest in this. Since when was it okay to present while holding your notes?

One has to assume you have to be a fan of NIN to understand this episode but I don't know ANYTHING about NIN. Luckily there were other references I do understand.

Ashley O singing a Nine Inch Nails song and everyone attributing it to her is an allegory for Johnny Cash singing a Nine Inch Nails song and everyone attributing it to him

Didn’t anyone catch the “27 club” reference throughout? The point of contention was how Ashley was going to be free from her contract when she turns “25,” inciting her handlers to put her down before her contract expires. Using age 27 in the episode would’ve been too cliche, even for the Black Mirror writers, but it is a play of the sudden deaths of Cobain, Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, Winehouse, etc at 27 - and all of these musicians were also controlled with drugs. IRL the artist who was actually put into a coma until contracts were signed and money was moved, then unplugged by his brand new wife, was Eazy-E.

Episode basically melded a lot of open-secrets and corruption in the music industry into one storyline, made light of it, and gently touched on the social problem of children mirroring back the hyper-sexualization of their favorite manufactured popstars, ultimately being controlled and programmed more than the entertainers themselves, but lost it’s way when the main character was left in the dust once Ashley Too gained consciousness. The only science-fiction, errr science-reality, this episode touched-on was the very real capturing of one’s personality, likeness, and voice via neural-learning AI software (mostly from social media data aggregation and voluntary voice sampling), just like in the episode “Be Right Back,” which has since become a reality. Also based on the almost identical looking robots that are very popular in Chinese and Japanese homes for socialization and adopted as pseudo-members of the family, brain mapping technology getting closer to literally reading minds, and the use of holograms for posthumous music performances (Michael Jackson).
This season is different than the rest because it very much takes place in the present, rather than a “possible” dark future, which was the goal of the creator this time around. 4 Seasons of the same, I completely understand why they wanted to experiment with the structure and subject matter on the 5th Season. They’re breaking the 4th wall and holding the Black Mirror up to the viewer now.

Am I the only one who did NOT like season 5 ? I watched it with my boyfriend and we both were like wow this was the worst season of Black Mirror. It didn’t even feel like Black Mirror especially this episode which was basically Hannah Montana. Also Ashley Too was the most annoying character ever. Like I said this is Hannah Montana. Basically like a edgy “Disney movie “ with a unrealistic predictable ending and the main characters getting everything and not suffering any repercussions for their actions. My boyfriend and I also brought up how putting well known celebrities in Black Mirror took away from the story.

SOMEBODYGOTSTOSAYIT Patterson Especially Eazy-E who many say was lucid and speaking while hospitalized prior to falling into a coma and dying after his new wife agreed to pull the plug rather quickly. Plus the frequent references Ashley being free from her contract when she turns “25,” inciting her handlers to put her down before her contract expires heavily references the “27 club” of Cobain, Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, Winehouse, etc - and how all of these musicians were also controlled with drugs.

In the scene where Jack starts trying to make things up to Rachel in the bedroom, theres an ad playing on the tv in the background for the grain implant from "The Entire History of You" right before the news story about Ashley's condition which shows them extracting the songs as she's in a coma and ends up setting off Ashley Too.

@majasteinchen yes its obvious that those are the original lyrics, but if you've seen the episode with subs on, you see that the lyrics for the remake say :"hey ah woah", and the girl in this video was reading out the lyrics, and said "hey i'm a hoe," because that's what's commonly heard.

I thought the only reason they could do what they did with the mind into the doll and the limiter was because their dads computer was able to do that. I don’t think everyone can do that. I don’t think they showed their dads job and everything about it for no reason

    • Jaz Bidgood
      Jaz Bidgood 6 месяцаў таму

      # TooMuchScotty I feel like showing the Dad’s basement was deliberate, since he literally had so many rats in cages. This is a clear parallel to Ashley’s lyrics about living in a cage and feeling trapped. I think its interesting that the software the dad uses to control & subdue the literal rats is then used on Ashley, a metaphorical caged rat, to set her free.

The leonard cohen line was hilarious...people who didn't like this episode dont know anything about music or the music industry. The stuff about celebrity worship was cool. This episode was about popism. It was also interesting rachel the pop sister was actually more adventurous and brave then the supposedly edgy sister jack who was only listening to altenative music because of her mother. There is light in dark and dark in light. This episode was light and deep at the same time. Transcendant and cute. I want an ashley doll.

OK but does anyone realize that this episode specifically calls out DISNEY and their exploitation of young performers?? In the end it all comes together: when Ashley and the girls ride in to expose Asley's aunt(=Disney) with the MOUSE car that has MOUSE CONTROL written on it and then
stepping out of the car, Asley throws her the middle finger (which was by the way one of Cyrus's signature moves after she broke away from Disney). And then they really hammered it home once again when Cyrus is performing 'Head like a hole' about her "shitty aunt" and when she sings "head like a hole; black as your soul; I'd rather die than give you control" they cut to the girls' father talking about a mouse and waving his mouse control device. Very gutsy episode, I even remember creator Charlie Brooker saying that Cyrus gave personal details about her life and that the episode is going to piss people off. Well done! Why is nobody talking about this?

    • iSham2044
      iSham2044 6 месяцаў таму +3

At least now I know why they were using a Mouse pest control, was literally wondering wtf was that symbolism meant throughout cause it was so random, everything from the exploitation and how she tried to kill herself make sense to me but the most sickening part about it is how she was only in a 'coma' for 6 months and they were still exploiting her

    • Lillu
      Lillu 6 месяцаў таму +11

@Meni Bags I think the true point of the episode is that they actually had the balls to call out Disney, one of the largest media and entertainment conglomerates in the world, for who they really are: an abusive, manipulative company with a "black soul" (as Miley Cyrus sings in the end) who only cares about money and doesn't give a shit about the performers that they represent (they think of them as expendable merchandise) or the consumers that they sell all the fake shit that they force the artists to create. Of course that's also extremely obvious to many, but the fact of the matter is that no TV show or movie have called them out before, at least to my knowledge (but I don't watch much TV, so I might be completely wrong here).

    • Meni Bags
      Meni Bags 6 месяцаў таму

@bhoujee megan Thats why i said its doesn't have that much depth. Who hasn't seen this story play out over and over again. Ohh poor rebelious rich celebrity feels controlled and doesn't have any freedom..I kind of got an Almost Famous vibe.

    • bhoujee megan
bhoujee megan 6 месяцаў таму +7

@Meni Bags i get it, i agree the episode doesn't reach black mirror expectations, but the episode does revolve around miley cyrus' experience with disney, it's quite obvious.
