During Snowtember, to make it across the final unplowed section to the house, I strapped on the chains which of course limits you to about 20-30 kmh or you could damage your car, the car plowed through the heavy snow without a problem but it took longer to strap on the chains in the snow then the trip itself. On a later trip through the unplowed section, I chanced it without the chains and it was just drifting instead of steering and hoping momentum will carry you through the snow to your driveway or plowed road, basically a gamble hoping you don't get stuck and forced to pull out the traction aids or push, sometimes disabling traction control so you could spin the wheels will get you moving again albeit by polishing off a slippery rut to trap the next guy. It's usually possible to get through without a problem with chains but it's a real pain to strap on and you're limited to a very low speed with chains on so it's simply not worth trying at all especially as it's usually only for short segments before reaching plowed and sanded roads where you could drive faster if you're not chained. I can see using modern retractable studded winter tires though... Many of the fleet cars such as the buses have trouble because they use all season tires to avoid the logistics of seasonal tire changes and tire storage and I wouldn't be surprised if many of these stuck cars also have all season tires.

I’ve driven in storms before and thought of braving this storm and still show up to work but I got stuck on the driveway while the building manager was shoveling it because the plow didn’t show up yet. He tried to create a way for me to get to the road but I got stuck just before getting to the road so I just reversed back in the parking lot and called it a day 😂

More traffic, less adaptation to weather, less snow days all a bad recipe for driving, cheers! ❄️☃️🌬⛄️

It is not just you. I am in my mid 50's. The snow in winter used to fall 6 to 8 inches, overnight into early a.m., and it was called December, January , February weather. And we'd usually get a winter storm in March, also.
Snowball fights waiting for the school bus when we didn't get a snow day. And, if it wasn't necessary to go to work, on the weekends, (or during the week) the parents stayed off the roads on bad weather days, so as to not get into accidents. It was called common sense. Not so common anymore.

I hope all those stuck, and still might be in their cars weren't in full electric cars who might have run out power to keep themselves warm. Let's all go electric.

    • Northern Media
Northern Media 4 месяцы таму +1

Electric cars can keep themselves warm for a few days on a full charge (and almost all leave the house on a full charge because your garage is your gas station). Another point is that electric cars use electricity to power the motor only when it's needed, you don't waste fuel like a combustion engine does by idling.
Absolutely think we should go all electric (or preferably all hydrogen), I'd imagine a Rivian truck would've handled perfectly fine yesterday morning

      FRACTURED VISION 4 месяцы таму

Didn’t u get the memo, cars run out of gas same as batteries deplete.
Also, Einstein, EV vehicles can run a heater for days, assuming you got a charge before embarking, just like you get gas.
Let’s all act stupid, and think we sound smart because of how dumb we are, like Dave Richards.

Historic storm? It's a dumping not a historic storm. They make it sound like we have never had snow like this before. Now every time we get some rain or snow, they scream hysteria and blame it all on climate change. Welcome to a Canadian Winter

@mrpotatohead and hisfantastic eyebrows Not true. For almost 30 years Ive driven on the most extreme snow and ice roads in North America and the snow in my backyard is usually up to my waist. These roads are horrible and very dangerous to drive on and this is most definitely a lot of snow all at once. No matter where you live the snowplows cannot keep up in such stormy conditions.

I have a small little 2008 Corolla with only front-wheel drive, but I also have Continental Viking Contact-7 winter tires on (one of the best) and I drove from Newmarket to North York to drop someone off at work at 8 a.m. and even though the snow was rubbing up against the bottom of the car on many of the streets, I had no problems since I had snow tires on. If I had all seasons on I would have been stuck a few dozen times.
