I was born in Perm in 1998 and adopted six months later, so I never got to really experience Russia. I'm so thankful for films like this so that I can experience what my life could have been. Great review Roman, looking forward to Brat 2, whenever that happens.

    Фильм вышел в 1997, 1 $ был 6000 и получим что арбуз стоил меньше доллара. Никак не 90 с лишним $.
That film was released in 1997, 1$ is 6000 rub. So a watermelon cost is less than 1$. Not like more 90$ you’ve said)

"The Brigade" is not a movie, this is TV Series. In this case it's an essential difference in plot and production quality.
And you could add that the director Balavanov is himself from then-called Sverdlovsk in Ural region originally, that's why he dedicated huge amounts of screen time to his favourite Ural rockers like Nautilus or Nastya Poleva. Not "who knows", you could do some slightest research like reading a wiki page of the film for example. And no, Sergey Bodrov wasn't a little bit like Danila with his twisted mind after Chechen war. Bodrov was a movies director's son, very intelligent and educated person.
The reason why all excerpts from film are mirrored I don't understand at all. Is there any idea behind this? :)
Sveta is mid-40s? You're kidding. Pismichenko was 33 at the time, and I assume her character was younger still
About having a VCR in Russia in 90s and so belonging to ANY kind of wealth is COMPLETE BULLSHIT, particularly in St. Petersburg. It may be true about the 80s, it's just a question of technical development of the country society and of free markets. I myself belonged to poorer family of working people, my mum and dad struggled to get any kind of work and income, but we had a video player in like 1995. Of course my parents weren't alcoholics, give you that.
One more detail - E-Rotic was a german project, that song was actually a big EURODANCE hit of that time and sounds exactly so, nothing American at all, adding even more obscurity to Danila's state of mind, threatening America like that, in a smalltalk with a Frenchman.
"Brother-2" is no way a better movie, it's just kind of a blockbuster shot to benefit from the success of "Brother", including it's soundtrack idea btw. And from the last rewatching I must say that the scene where Danila rampages in the Metro club in Chicago, killing everyone in sight, REALLY pisses me off.

12:13 That's a clear mistake, bruh. Solely because you was born in 1998 :/
That's entirely legitimate price for watermelon, if you remember the year next to when the movie was made. There was a devaluation of Rubl in the 1998. I was born not long before movie, but I still remember exchanging "old" rubles for "new" (modern) rubles with my granddaddy during summer 1998, ratio was like 100:1. So it's more like 0,92$.
But yeah, inflation was terrible. Worse that terrible. In the early 90's, when I was like 1 yo, my grandads opened a bank deposit for me and put there 12'000 rubls. That was a lot of money during that time. Probably not enough for buying decent house, but enough for cheap apartements. Now it's, like, enough for pack of cigarettes. And not even the good ones :/
    Great review, btw.

Denomination was 1:1000 and of course you couldn't buy no apartments for 12000 early-90s-roubles, what's that for crazy idea. I bought my first computer, a variant of ZX Spectrum, for like 10000 roubles around 1993

seing as how America and the EU is pissing on old agreements with Russia. and how they have been encroaching on former soviet territory. i dont think Russia is any more of an aggressor than America or the EU.

With Bodrov Jr. And Balbanov being dead, it wont capture the magic of it. Maybe if it was focused on Viktor and it was directed by Sergey's father(Who also happens to be an excellent director), it may do well but their spirits would still linger

I just watched брат. It was my first russian film ive ever seen. Its probably one of my favorite movies now. I just started to learn Russian, so I had to watch it with subtitles. I am fascinated with the Russian culture and its language. I cant wait to watch this movie again when I have more of an understanding of the language, so I dont have to watch it with subtitles.

Please do more of this kind of stuff and by that I don't mean movie reviews but just something with a slower pacing without all the youtuby jumpcuts etc.I love the perspective you have to offer and I'm quite happy that a lot of your videos are just taking the piss but I'm also quite certain it can be done with less hectic, less repetition, etc.

I really hope that conscription stuff sorts itself out and you get to study in Europe (preferably Germany for purely egotistical reasons). Stay awesome.
