Lee Health is a nationally recognized, award-winning health system in Southwest Florida. We are caring people, inspiring health.
It happens when there is an overproduction of electrical activity in the brain. “Seizures can occur for many different reasons, sometimes from metabolic problems, or even medications could cause a seizure on an isolated basis, or even toxic chemicals could cause a seizure,” explained Dr. John Sullivan, a neurologist on the medical staff of Lee Health.
But if a patient has a seizure, it doesn’t mean they have epilepsy. “Epilepsy is defined as having multiple unprovoked seizures,” he said.
There are many different types of seizures, just like there are many different types of epilepsy. To determine the difference and the cause, patients may undergo a series of testing including an MRI and EEG screening. “The EEG is particularly helpful to see electrically where in the brain the seizure could be coming from,” said Dr. Sullivan.
A physical examination, a detailed medical history, and diagnostic testing can help physicians diagnose and treat the problem. “They are treated differently. Commonly, if we find there is a provoking occurrence, simply removing the provoking occurrence is enough to cause the seizures to go away, or if we need to use medication if it truly is an epilepsy syndrome,” said Dr. Sullivan.
Approximately 3 and a half million people in the U.S. have epilepsy; whereas, studies show one in 10 people may develop a seizure in life. “Folks who do have epilepsy, true epilepsy, the risks of reoccurrence of seizures can be quite high. Most all of those patients do require medical care and medication to try to control those seizures,” Dr. Sullivan said.
Surgery may also be an option for patients. If a person experiences a seizure, it’s important they seek medical care to determine the cause.

Hey.. I’m 40 and have been having seizures for 35 years. I have to tell you this. Just change your diet. It was my last straw.. on 10/12/2019 I decided to try the carnivore diet. I know it’s ably been a few months now but I haven’t had a seizure since then. And I feel better overall. There are too many benefits to list on this way of eating but I’d suggest you research it and give it a shot.
I eat eggs, fatty meats, beef steaks, lamb, salmon, chicken, and I sometimes have heavy cream in my tea, and I use homemade butter - made with heavy cream, and homemade mayo - I make that with olive oil and egg yolks. And I use pink salt and drink only water.
You basically cut out everything but fatty meat, salt, water and eggs. You’ll wish you knew about this years ago. I do..

Long term epileptic as well. Just turned 26.
I'm very happy. Positive. And fine with my life. I'm not much religious, but everything has a reason and purpose.
But if I have to say my own opinion. I DO NOT think. There would be a "cure" for Epilepsy.
A Cure is for a Disease,
Just like how Religion is different from Philosophy,
We have a CONDITION, not a Disease.
I am an IDIOPATHIC Eplietpic. I get them for no reasons.
But i have read marijuana actually does recess these conditions.
But I'm not the type to lean into smoking. Medicinal or not.

I've been having seizures for a while now. Had an EEG which I was told was normal. Then when I saw my neuro last week he said the EEG showed two seizures. I only remember one. He said my MRI showed changes in my brain, even though I had a letter that said it was normal.???? I'm due to have a take home EEG and video stuff if the take home doesn't work. I had a bad seizure the other day and I know I've got a bad one coming today. I couldn't sleep due to stomach ache, my head doesn't feel right, I feel sick and I know it's going to happen, just a case of when. As soon as I start feeling really dizzy that's when it will come. I also have drop seizures and partial seizures. I also think light is a trigger as my Big seizure happened after watching a light sabre fight in a film on tv. I'm on epilepsy drugs but working up to a proper dose which will take another couple of weeks so I'm not benefitting from it yet. It seems to have stopped the little seizures and left me with the big ones at the moment. My love to all who have this and the comments I've read. Some made me cry at how people are suffering and have been unable to get help. Love to you all xxx

100% correlation between seizures and solar forcing, no matter the underlying condition, this is after 6 years and thousands of seizures in hundreds of people, block solar forcing and no more seizure. It is amazing after all these years, they miss the fact that everyone has seizures at the exact same time! (In the same time zone & those equally susceptible to the level of solar forcing) ALL MEDICAL EPISODES ARE TRIGGERED BY SOLAR FORCING, the proof is right in front of you. I don't care if you are from Stanford or the best in the field, you are no closer to understanding episodes than you were 20 years ago, I just gave you the answer so now take it and get the nobel prize.

You're saying to ... block solar forcing and EVERYONE's seizures will stop within 5 years?

And just so you know, I created shielding and people I know never had a seizure, a migraine again. Some also stopped their strokes (ischemic) within seconds. That is because stroke is a medical episodes (vascular spasm) triggered by solar forcing, since I predicted over a dozen strokes 24 hours prior, it means stroke is not random and I win.

Epilepsy has many forms. At 17, I had a trauma while smoking cannabis for the 1st time. The cannabis confused the issue badly. I wouldn't be able to explain what happened then, for over 40 years. Looking into my past, I can now say that I experienced epigastric aura which preceded a powerful temporal lobe seizure. One half of my head went cold and numb. A tingling mass walked to the left rear of my head and began tensing. After 4 or 5 seconds, the tensing exploded in an electrical shock sensation which convulsed my brain, mind, and vision. My vision distorted in a way that you might expect if you suddenly looked through the wrong end of binoculars. Things zoomed away and became very small, as if at the far end of a tunnel. This hallucination lasted for maybe 1.5 seconds, then the tensing began again and the process repeated itself for about 3 minutes. I presume I had over 30 epileptic discharges during this time. The tensing, I believe, was the polarization process of my brain neurons.
Thereafter, I was never the same. I did not sleep for 2 weeks. I had horrible anxiety. I was agoraphobic. I lost all positive emotions. Friends and family seemed alien. I had a profound sense of hopelessness and was filled with fear. After 6 weeks of suffering, I had an EEG performed. Since I was 17, the neurologist consulted with my mother, who then told me my EEG was "normal with one lead off". She then begged me not to need further medical care, as the expense was hurting the family. So, I put one foot in front of the other for 40 years, suffering 4 additional episodes of major depression interspersed with frequent ocular migraines and focal temporal lobe seizures. I saw a neurologist for my headaches and he explained they were believed to be harmless. He stated the British had done more research in that area, as US neurology "had bigger fish to fry". He never offered an EEG, which would have shown I was actively epileptic. 25 years after seeing him, I remembered his comment about the Brits. I found a case history in a British neurological journal in a UK medical library which matched my own experience in every minute detail. I was suffering from a rare epileptic syndrome which had segued into an affective disorder of major depression. It was a crime that my mother was allowed to deceive me at age 17, sentencing me to 40 years of suffering without diagnosis. I sought an epileptologist who verified my EEG showed pathology in my dominant temporal lobe, consistent with a history of epileptic seizure. I was not currently having seizures, so I was given paperwork and told to report to social security as "disabled". I had ECT in 2014 which resolved my major depressive symptoms. They don't understand anymore today, than they did 40 years ago. I guess they are still after bigger fish. I excelled at everything in life because I was so afraid of failure. People would be shocked to know the truth.

looking up the definition of trauma: "a deeply distressing or disturbing experience." Yes, that's what I had. No, I didn't fall off a roof or get hit by a car. I experienced temporal lobe seizures with epileptic discharges. I'm glad you enjoy cannabis. I hope you forgive me for not enjoying it as well.

You "had a trauma while smoking cannabis"?? Do you mean you were like... hit by a car or fell off a roof or what "trauma"? If you are saying you had a trauma CAUSED by the cannabis, it sounds more like you smoked more than just cannabis... like perhaps there was some Angel Dust in it (that was very popular 40 years ago... I know this because 40 years ago I was 17 also :) and I smoked a lotttt of weed back then). Now I smoke weed again (legally) and it has actually stopped the seizures I had following an attack where I was left deprived of oxygen for some time.

@tommy serrato I got the same treatment. It took 40 years before they would recognize my illness. I didn't make it easy for them. I finished a 3 year enlistment in the army with an honorable and good conduct medal. I graduated at the top of my class in technical school. Set production records at a US Steel blast furnace. Got straight As through 4 levels of calculus and a couple 300 level math classes. I won open racquetball tournaments. All while managing to stay out of jail. But when I finally got them to do an EEG, they were like "'re disabled". And I said. Yup, been that way since I was 17.

I’ve had to explain seizures, types, what they are, etc to doctors. Yes, doctors. I’ve been through about a dozen neurologist and my last one is the best one I’ve ever had. He came in the hospital room and was talking to me and I started to converse with me about my seizures, simple complex partial and atonic. He stopped me before I could finish “simp...” and said “Don’t use those big words, I don’t like them.” “How do YOU feel when your having a seizure?” He actually calls me on the phone himself to talk to me. He requested blood work and calls to tell the results himself. My mother has been a RN for 25 years and she said she’s never heard of such a thing. Don’t stop until you find an actual good doctor, and find an actual epileptologist. Find one that dosent like the big words if you can. 😊

Cute. Docters are funny with that label they carry, that shiny piece of paper that states their 'Degree'. Sarcasm if you can't open your mind and THINK, analyze, comprehend the point and many forms of the thing we call Communication.
I've been an Epileptic for 27 years now and still have MANY KINDS OF SEIZURES! Been through many docs, meds, EEG, MRI, brain surgery, tests etc etc. Still ignored, mocked, lied to, no support. And holy shit they get paid a fortin to test on those who carry 'conditions'. Ment as in, get off your high horse docs! It's a big world full of many different forms of existence. Where's equality? Unless you truly have 'walked a mile in my shoes ', you realy just don't get it.
The turn 'Epilepsy' is like the top of the pyramid and below it are further and further detail and such of the many forms of Seizures that CREATE the topic/Title EPILEPSY, being the many types of 'Seizures' ! (you know how many dam seizures I've had, and many others at that have had a seizure or more and the medical staff/docter DO NOT get involved! I've had many ER trips from a seizure and EVERY SINGLE DOCTER I was under NEVER called the ER, assisted, put on file, ask what took place in my mind during the seizure for analysis etc!)

*THEY RELY ON THEIR MACHINES TOO MUCH* Two States Neurologists tells me I have Epilepsy but then I moved here and they don't want to get my medical records they want to run their own test and all they have here is Psychology Neurology not just plan Neurology and I didn't have a Seizure for them on their EEG so now a therapist will help me stop my seizures! But I have a much more serious problem with my brain lol... yes and they still won't give me the Seizures but as soon as they confirm that I do in fact have a bigger problem.... They drop me as a patient! I've had 4 of them drop me already so this new one I started out in the first phone call with write these things down and show them to the Neurologist and ask him if he still wants to be my Dr because I've had 4 run away in under 3yrs and I don't want to waste anymore time! He called himself about a week later and asked me questions about my note to him and and I told him if he had access to hospital portholes he could look at 2 different MRI's and I was bringing the one with the Stroke with me, we set the appointment for the following week! He confirmed it and yup I'm terminal but he wanted an EEG as well because he read the note on my Seizures as well lol and guess what? They couldn't make me have a Seizure but sure enough as soon as I get back into my frig'n Caregivers car here comes the Seizure! Ugh

    A series of tests..What when you can't even afford the co-pays ?
My wife started having seizures three years ago after stopping the opiates that her doctors gave her over sixteen years for her multiple sclerosis and fibromyalgia.
The first two seizures killed her.
My training and God's grace revived her.
I'm thankful for everything that I have in this life which isn't much.
Material things never mattered, therefore being at the bottom of the financial ladder never bothered us.
Being financially poor when sick is a living nightmare.
Please pray for my wife and my sanity and perseverance.

@Beta i suggest to talk to ayurvedic doctors. It's curable by ayurveda. And if you have doubts please find some time and read ayurveda. World's first surgery was done by ayurveda and the name of surgeon is sushruta. You can google it easily. Don't believe my words. Believe your knowledge and google about ayurvedic treatment for the same. It's non curable in allopathy but not in ayurveda. Human body is made by nature and can be cured only by natural things.

@ASHISH SINGH I have trouble believing this.
Every neuro I've spoken to, and research points to that it is not curable.
A diet cannot cure epilepsy, especially in every case. In some cases, it can taper medication, but usually not completely.
That is why they are incurable. Please refrain from saying such ignorant things, unless you had epilepsy yourself and now you don't.

imran khan I had to quit keppra because I was having insane rage outbursts and the medicine I switched over to, zonisimide, seems to hinder thinking abilities, I can hardly read or concentrate, these medications are no joke and you’re right to be worried about another seizure but if you havnt had one in years and years you might be ok. These medications seem so hindering that it’s worth trying, goodluck

    • imran khan

      @Adam Worrall yes Keppra....

    • Adam Worrall
      Adam Worrall Год таму +1

imran khan you can probably split the pill in half by hand or with a pill cutter, im not a doctor but they usually just go by the book on what they’re doing, I’d go to the extreme with tapering off and make that 250mg into halves and Forths if possible, I’m assuming it’s keppra, just keep reducing the dose over a time period so it’s gradual and not sudden

    • imran khan
      imran khan Год таму

@Adam Worrall yes the doctor advised me first 500 mg twice a day for two years, then for 6 weeks 250 mg twice a day and now 6 weeks 250 mg once when going to bed. He said we have done our course, now hopefully it will work. But because of previous experience I am still worried.

    • Adam Worrall
      Adam Worrall Год таму +1

imran khan if you stop taking a seizure medication you need to taper off it which means to lower the dose. If it’s a capsule a day with beads in it then empty out the capsule and divide it into half for a month then a third then a fourth then a fifth. You can’t stop abruptly because it will trigger seizures. It’s like a rubber band effect of electrical activity

One thing not mentioned here is that up to 30% of epileptics have something called “intractable epilepsy” and the use of medications doesn’t effectively stop their seizures. As part of that 30% I also have a higher chance of experiencing SUDEP (sudden death in epilepsy). There is still NO CURE for epilepsy. These are just a couple little facts left out of the video that anyone interested in the condition should consider in their investigation.
